Neuro-Affirming Approaches to Brainspotting
Instructors:
Erin Findley, PsyD, Certified Brainspotting Consultant
Romy Graichen, Psychotherapist & Brainspotting Consultant
Dates:Â July 17-19, 2026
Format: 3-day live training via Zoom (9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Eastern each day)
Neuro-Affirming Approaches to Brainspotting is a three-day training designed for Brainspotting therapists (minimum Phase 1-trained) seeking to integrate neurodivergent-affirming principles into their clinical practice. This workshop introduces participants to the neurodiversity paradigm as it applies to therapeutic attunement, processing differences, and trauma conceptualization. Through didactic instruction, live demonstrations, and experiential practicum work, participants will learn to adapt Brainspotting techniques to meet the sensory, cognitive, and relational needs of neurodivergent clients, including those with autism, ADHD, and related neurotypes. Emphasis is placed on flexibility, cultural humility, and awareness of therapist countertransference in cross-neurotype work. By the end of the course, attendees will be able to apply neuro-affirming principles to enhance safety, precision, and efficacy in Brainspotting sessions across a wide range of client presentations.
This training is appropriate for intermediate-level therapists.
By the end of this 3-day training, participants will be able to:
- Articulate Conceptual Understanding
- Describe core Brainspotting principles and their relevance to neuro-affirming practice.
- Explain the neurodiversity paradigm and distinguish it from deficit-based and pathology models.
- Identify how neurobiological, sensory, and processing differences affect attunement and limbic co-regulation in Brainspotting.
- Apply Clinical Language and Cultural Competence
- Use neuro-affirming language and avoid ableist terminology in clinical dialogue.
- Evaluate how intersectional factors (race, gender, culture, class, disability) shape neurodivergent client experiences.
- Apply culturally sensitive and inclusive practices when integrating Brainspotting with neurodivergent clients.
- Apply Therapeutic Skills
- Modify Brainspotting setup, pacing, and language to support clients with alexithymia, low interoception, sensory sensitivities, and executive-function differences.
- Apply the Uncertainty Principle and No-Assumptions Principle in sessions with clients who have trauma-based or neurologically-based needs for clarity and predictability.
- Integrate physical health, sensory, and environmental considerations into Brainspotting for neurodivergent clients.
- Increase Therapist Awareness and Reflexivity
- Analyze therapist limbic countertransference, implicit bias, and attunement challenges in ND-affirming work.
- Reflect critically on personal neurotype, privilege, and positionality in therapeutic relationships.
- Demonstrate flexibility and creativity when working with non-linear attention, monotropism, and alternative processing styles.
- Demonstrate Clinical Integration and Competence
- Demonstrate ND-affirming Brainspotting adaptations in dyadic practice.
- Formulate neuro-affirming treatment goals that respect client autonomy, sensory needs, and processing styles.
- Synthesize neurodiversity-affirming principles with Brainspotting’s Dual Attunement Frame to enhance therapeutic safety and effectiveness.
